Sharlston Rover Juniors are a newly formed junior group who are running 5 junior rugby teams in a ex-mining community. We initially started with a handful of players and in the last two years we have introduced rugby to over 100 children, boys and girls ranging from ages 4-11. The ground and changing room facilities we use have been used in the past by adults, but never by families and never on this scale they are now. Pushchair and wheelchair access is very limited and what we do have is unsafe. The ground lacks paths adequate enough to facilitate wheelchairs and pushchairs this area leads to our clubhouse. The route leads down grassed slope which is winter becomes very muddy and slippy. The paved area outside the changing rooms is very uneven with raised and broken paving. We have already encountered several accidents with children tripping over the raised flags. We are trying to raise money to make the ground and facilities safe for families and friends to come and use. Our aim is to get as many juniors and their families from the village and surrounding area involved in sport and give the children a positive goal outside of school with the aim of reducing anti-social behaviour in the area. We want the children to have an area to be proud of but that is safe for all uses. With the money we are trying to raise to improve the groundworks it would hopefully entice more clubs and groups from the area to come and use our facilities so the project would benefit the whole community.
